Mali and Burkina Faso Tour — 8 days

A fascinating glimpse into the rural heart of traditional West Africa


Every tour is private, scheduled on dates of your choice, with a Saturday arrival in Bamako; there are no fixed-date scheduled departures.

Contact us for prices. Groups of any size are welcome. Be sure to specify how many persons are in your party—prices are digressive, so a better value per person for a party of four than a party of two, etc.

Day 1 Saturday: Arrival in Bamako, Mali
International flight arrives in Bamako, airport-to-hotel transfer; overnight in Bamako (Grand Hotel, or similar)

Day 2 Sunday: Bamako - Segou (235 km) (B)
City tour of Bamako: visit the National Museum and the artisans' village; after lunch, 3-hour drive to Segou, Mali's second largest city and former colonial administrative center; overnight in Segou (Hotel Independance, or similar)

Day 3 Monday: Segou - Djenne (320 km) - Mopti(130 km) (B)
Drive to Djenne, arriving in time to see the colorful weekly market, when Djenne is at its colorful best; stroll around the market stalls, spread out before the magnificent Great Mosque, the world's largest mud brick architecture and one of Unesco's World Heritage sites; in the afternoon, drive to Mopti for a relaxing sunset sail on the Niger River; overnight in Mopti (Hotel Kanaga, or similar)

Day 4 Tuesday: Mopti - Dogon country (120 km) (B)
City tour of Mopti, and onward to Mali's fascinating Dogon country; visit Songo village and Sangha, comprised of 10 distinct animist and Islamic villages; overnight in Sangha (Hotel Campement Guina, or similar)

Day 5 Wednesday: Dogon country - Mopti (120 km) (B)
Visit Dogon villages along the Bandiagara escarpment; at day's end, return to Mopti for overnight (Hotel Kanaga, or similar)

Day 6 Thursday: Mopti - Bobo Dioulasso, BURKINA FASO (465 km) (B)
After breakfast depart Mali for Burkina Faso; overnight in Bobo Dioulasso (Hotel Auberge, or similar)

Day 7 Friday: Bobo Dioulasso - Ouagadougou (360 km) (B)
Tour Bobo Dioulasso ("house of the Bobo merchants"), Burkina Faso's second largest city; see the old mosque, the Houet Museum, and visit the old Kibidwe artisans' district; in the afternoon, drive to Ouagadougou for overnight (Hotel Silmande, or similar)

Day 8 Saturday: Ouagadougou (B)
Explore Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso's capital city; visit the Grand Market and the National Museum, with its interesting collection of regional clothing, masks, household utensils and ancestral statues; also visit the crafts markets at the Artisans' Center, where you will find basketry, batik fabrics, wooden statues and masks, jewelry, leatherwork and bronze castings; in the evening, transfer to the airport for final departure

Tour includes the following:

  • 7 nights hotel, double occupancy
  • day-room in Ouagadougou on the final day

  • airport transfers upon arrival in Bamako and departure in Ouagadougou

Not included are international airfare to/from Africa, entry visas (Mali, Burkina Faso), lunches, dinners, drinks/bottled water, tips, optional Dogon mask dance, and personal expenses.
