Every tour is private, scheduled on dates of your choice, beginning on a Friday and ending on a Monday in Bamako; there are no fixed-date scheduled departures.

Contact us for prices. Groups of any size are welcome. Be sure to specify the month/year of travel, and how many persons are in your party—prices are digressive, so a better value per person for a party of four than a party of two, etc.

Regretfully this desert tour is temporarily unavailable, due to insecurity in the desert.


ITINERARY
10 Dec. 2008

D1 Friday: Arrive in Bamako, MALI

Your international flight arrives in Bamako in the evening; airport-to-hotel transfer; overnight in Bamako (Grand Hotel, or similar)

D2 Saturday: Bamako - Timbuktu - Sahara desert

Transfer to the airport for your early morning flight to Timbuktu; meet your Tuareg guide and depart into the desert by 4-wheel drive vehicle; dinner and overnight camping in Azoya
with Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

D3 Sunday: Araouane

Resume driving across the dunes, and arrive in Araouane for lunch; dinner and overnight camping in Araouane
with Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

D4 Monday: Oued el Hajar

Desert excursion continues, to Oued el Hajar; overnight camping
with Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

D5 Tuesday: Taoudenni

To Foum el Alous, and arrive in Taoudenni; visit the salt mines of Taoudenni; overnight camping
with Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

D6 Wednesday: Ounanes

Drive to Ounanes; overnight camping
with Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

D7 Thursday: Araouane

Drive to Bou'Djebeha; lunch at Araouane; dinner and overnight camping in Araouane
with Breakfast, Lunch, Dininer

D8 Friday: Return to Timbuktu

Drive to Taganet for lunch, and continue to Timbuktu at day's end; overnight in Timbuktu (Hotel Hendrina Khan, or similar)
with Breakfast, Lunch

D9 Saturday: Timbuktu

Full day in Timbuktu to visit this former metropolis at the edge of the desert: visit the ancient mosques and former universities, the museum, the explorers' houses, the city market, the artisans' center; overnight in Timbuktu (Hotel Hendrina Khan, or similar)
with Breakfast

D10 Sunday: Timbuktu - Bamako

Early morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Bamako; check into your hotel day room and take the rest of the day at leisure; overnight in Bamako (Grand Hotel, or similar)
with Breakfast

D11 Monday: Bamako - final departure

Bamako city tour in the morning: visit the Muso Kounda Museum, the city market, the artisans' village; in the evening, transfer to the airport for your final departure
with Breakfast

NB: camping is no frills, sleeping on a ground mattress in a small tent; there are no campgrounds, so no running water, no latrines. Camping in Mali is not recommended for inexperienced campers.

NB: Domestic flights are subject to availability; if flights are not available, add two days for roundtrip overland transportation to/from Timbuktu.

  • Bamako hotel, 2 nights, double occupancy, with breakfast (B)

  • all hotel taxes, local tourism taxes and site visit fees, as per tour program
  • airport transfers for international arrival and departure in Mali (Bamako)

The price does not include international travel to/from Bamako; Mali visas; non-specified meals, drinks/bottled water; tips, sleeping bags, and personal expenses.
